SEDE DIDATTICA

HEADQUARTER OF THE DIDACTIC ACTIVITIES
Almost all the didactic activities of the Degree Course are held at the headquarter of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Food and Environment , located inside the monastic complex of St. Peter, at the gates of Perugia. Only for the frequency of English language lessons it is necessary to go to the University Language Centre .

The monastic heritage , ruled for centuries by Benedictine monks and confiscated by the nascent Kingdom of Italy in 1860, has played an important role in the life of the city and of the surrounding countryside ; the location on the inside, before of the Agricultural Institute Experimental (1896-1936) , later of the Faculty of Agriculture (1936-2013) and today of the Department of Agricultural Sciences , Food and Environment ( 2014) made it a permanent basis in agricultural education service . This would not only fulfill the statutory mission assigned to the former Benedictine heritage , also holds a deep symbolic meaning of continuity with the past.

During the Middle Ages, the activities of the monks, in fact, represented a real gym for the implementation and improvement of knowledge on the cultivation of plants. The monks controlled the various aspects of farming, from the settlement of land to the planning and execution of hydraulic works, from the experimentation of new cultivation techniques to the introduction of food crops and medicinal plants.

Great was the fame gained by the Benedictine monks of Perugia for the reclamation works of the land that stretched between the Communes of Casalina, Deruta and Marsciano, which allowed the introduction of new crops and of appropriate cultivation techniques of fields, giving so a significant boost to the progress of agriculture.
